Dr Mohamed Sheriff Jaldeen

Kalabushana Dr Mohamed Sheriff Jaldeen was born on 9th October 1936. He was the eldest in a family of 3 boys and was educated at St. Sebastians College, Kotahena.  

Dr. Jaldeen passed the Advocates Final Examination of the Sri Lanka Law College and was admitted to the bar in 1974. He had an active practice, particularly in civil cases.

He graduated from the University of Colombo as a Bachelor of Law (LLB) and in 1987 passed the Master of Laws (LLM)  degree of the University of Colombo. His dissertation was on General Preferences Trade in International Law (The GATT).

He subsequently read for the Ph.D. doctorate in law at the University of Colombo and his  thesis was on “The Legal nature and significance of Bi-lateral investment treaties”.

Prior to his enrolment as an attorney at Law, he was employed at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka when he passed the examinations leading to associate-ship of the Institute of Bankers of London.

For nearly a decade he was the Quazi of the judicial area of Colombo North and since 1989, a member of the Waqf Board of Sri Lanka. He was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Review under the Ceiling on Housing Property Laws which is an Appellate Tribunal which reviewed the decisions of the Commissioner of National Housing. 

In 1983, Dr. Jaldeen and Al Haj Mehar Jaleel, long time residents of Mabole, Wattala felt a need to establish a Malay Association to cover the Mabole, Wattala, Ragama, Kandana, Kelaniya, Ja-ela and surrounding areas and began visiting Malay families with an intent to start an association. In 1984, the Mabole Malay Religious, Social and Cultural Association (MMRSCA) was established and for convenience the name was subsequently changed to the Mabole Malay Association (MMA). Dr. Jaldeen was elected as its 2nd President.

Dr. Jaldeen also held the office of President of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Pensioners Welfare Association for many years. He was also Legal Adviser to the Sri Lanka Malay Confederation (SLAMAC) and Legal Counsel for the Wekande Jumma Mosque.

He wrote 4 books viz:  “The Muslim Law of Marriage, Divorce & Maintenance in Sri Lanka” in 1990; and in 2004 published the revised second edition of the same book considered a comprehensive work in the sphere of the Muslim Law of Marriage used by practising lawyers  students of Law and academic researchers  in Sri Lanka; “The Muslim Law of Succession Inheritance & Waqf in Sri Lanka”, a practicing Lawyers Handbook in 1993;  and  in 1996 be wrote the Biography of “T.B. Jayah - A national hero of Sri Lanka” which is widely quoted by many academics and professionals in pedagogy in the island. Dr. Jaldeen has additionally written several research papers on Muslim Law of Marriages in numerous law Journals and other law college publications whenever he was requested to do so.

He passed away peacefully on 14th August 2012, after a brief illness at the age of 76 years and was buried on 15th Aug 2012 at the Mabole Muslim burial grounds. The Chief Imam of the Wekande Jumma Mosque Muzni Ameer (Dheeni) officiated at the burial ceremony and delivered the bayan.

May Almighty Allah grant him “Jannathul Firdhouse”. Ameen.

Al Haj T. M. Jaleel, JP

Al Haj T.M. Jaleel was one of the conveners of the Mabole Malay Association, together with Sdr.  T.Falaldeen and Sdr M.S. Jaldeen (later Dr).   Together they mooted the idea of forming a Malay association in the Mabole area after the WHERKS Malay Association became defunct. They went round visiting Malay families in the environs of Mabole and invited them to be members.   Very soon the group got the Constitution and office bearers drawn up and had the association registered as a non-profit social organization.

Al Haj Jaleel was the third president of MMA during the period 1988 to 1990.   He was ably assisted by his dynamic wife Hajiani Matahari.   They have six children, sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren as of date. They have been residing in Mabole for the past 54 years.  He was working at M/s Shaw Wallace Hedges and is now in retirement.

Al Haj Jaleel was a trustee of the Mabole Jumma Masjid for four years.

Sdr. M. D. (Tony) Saldin

M.D. (Tony) Saldin joined the MMA in 1984, as an ordinary member, and held several positions as EXCO member, Director, Assistant Secretary, General Secretary, Vice President and then as the 5th MMA President from 1992-1994. He was also re-elected President/MMA for the 2nd time in 2008. Some of the highlights during his involvement in the Association were organizing the first fund raiser in 1985 by publishing a souvenir, being Project Chairman for the Association’s previous website project, www.mabolemalays.com launched on February 4th, 2006, and being Project Chairman (Administration) for the “Bintang Melayu 2” Malay Talent cultural show held on 29th Jan 2012. He has organized several picnics and outings as VP, Social/Cultural Affairs to places such as Peradeniya Botanical Gardens; Gampaha Gardens, Hotel Lagoon Paradise, Dungalpitiya; Dampe Village, Piliyandala; Bopath Ella Waterfall, Kuruvita; Nature Reserve and National Park, Nittambuwa; etc.
                                                 
In addition, he has served in several organizations, as Secretary of the Maharagama Jaycees, Asst. Secretary-General of the Sri Lanka Malay Confederation (SLAMAC), President of the Sri Lanka Indonesia Friendship Association (SLIFA), Hony. Secretary of the Ceylon Society of Australia and Hony. Asst. Treasurer/Website co-coordinator of the Lanka Japan Friendship Society.

He was employed as General Manager for Sri Lanka & Maldives for the Global Japanese Trader – Nichimen Corporation/Sojitz Corporation until his retirement from that company in 2013. Currently he is Managing Director/CEO for Saladin International Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd a family owned trading company.

He is married and has 3 daughters and 2 grand-children. His wife Sharni was Hony General Secretary of the MMA in 1994 and his eldest daughter Melathi was MMA Youth Secretary and Editor–MMA Newsletter “Surath Khabar”; 2nd daughter Raiza served as an EXCO member and 3rd daughter Afrah has taken part as a singer in all stage shows of the MMA. During his free time, he is a keen angler, avid reader and gardener. He is also a freelance writer and writes to the media, mostly on the colonial military history of the Sri Lankan Malays. He is an old boy of Greenlands College/Isipathana College, Colombo.

Al Haj Baharien Haleed, JP

Mohamed Baharain Haleed (Sinnen), J.P. (whole island), is the son of Late Tuan Mohamed Haleed Sinnen and of Late Sithie Zanooba (nee Ismail). He is married to Gnei  Proja Miskin from Nuwara Eliya and they have three children, a son and two daughters. Baharain joined the Mabole Malay Association in 1990 on the introduction of the late Farook Thaliph,  Editor – “Terang” Newsletter.

During the Presidency of Thajudeen Girsy, he co-ordinated the stage plays "Nusantara 1 and 2".

He was elected as President of the Mabole Malay Association in 2001/2002 and also in the year 2009/2010 and has been serving as the Hony.Treasurer of the Mabole Malay Association for a long period.

Baharain attended St.Benedicts College, Kotahena in 1949 and from 1950 to 1960 he was educated at Zahira College, Colombo 10 during the time of Dr.T.B.Jayah and Dr. A.M.A. Azeez. After he sat for his S.S.C (ord.) exam and the G.C.E, he followed a 2 year course in the London Chamber of Commerce (LCC) in 1962. He was a Senior Prefect in college.

Hajiani Farida Meedin

Saudari Hajiani Farida Meedin joined the MMA in 2009. Four years later her husband Hakeem Meedin, who was abroad, also joined the MMA after his return to Sri Lanka. She actively took part in the stage play “Nusantara 1” organized by the MMA and was Co-Project Chairman for “Nusantara 2” together with Saudara Azad Jurangpathy.

Hajiani Farida has held various posts in the MMA EXCO, as a Committee member and subsequently  as Director, in the Religious Affairs section, and also as VP Women’s Affairs. During her tenure in the EXCO, she was involved in the organizing of the get-together “Kachchang Goreng”, the monthly Religious Knowledge Discussions, Bayans,  Cookery Demonstrations and various other social service projects such as distribution of food and water during floods in the Wattala and Kelaniya areas.

In the year 2001 she was appointed President by the MMA Executive Committee, after the resignation of Saudara Baharain Haleed, who resigned to go to the United States.

Hajiani Farida functioned as the Hony General Secretary of the MMA from 2013 to 2015. Her husband Hakeem and son Sharwan were also active members of the MMA.

Hajiani Eileen Dane
Hajiani Eileen Dane is an MMA member since its founding year (1984). She worked at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for over 30 year and is now happily retired and striving in the progress of the Malay community. Besides that, she volunteers for women's advancement, is an avid reader, gardener, and likes to travel. Her family with three grandchildren are her pride and joy.
Sdr Sabir Sariffo’deen
Sdr. Sabir joined the MMA as a Youth Member in 1988. He was keen to learn about Malays language, culture, and history, and the MMA enabled him to do this. He started as a committee member of the Youth & Sports section under the leadership of Omar Hamid and went through many memorable challenges. Having successfully overcome these challenges, he had the golden opportunity of becoming the first ever youth member of the MMA as its President for the years during the years 2004 - 2006. He is thankful to his “gurus” - Bunny Uncle, Tony Kaka (Saldin), the late Farook Racip uncle, the late uncle Falaldeen, Eileen Aunty, and Dani Aunty for helping him during his formative years with the MMA. He is also thankful to his father, Major B. G. N. (Bagaff) Sariffo’deen for instilling in him the pride in being Malay. Since 2006, Sdr Sabir has served the Exco occupying different portfolios. His main involvement was as the Vice President of the Youth & Sports section. Sdr. Sabir is a Marketer by profession. Having worked in different fields he has been now been serving in the Print Media Industry for more than two decades. He is currently the Manager – Advertising of the “Sunday Leader”. Sdr Sabir is married to Minori Sarrifo’deen (nee Assan) and they are the proud parents of four lovely daughters - Zahara who just finished her A/L’s and is doing her higher studies whilst working at HSBC, Aqilah, who will do her O/L’s this year, Raihana who is in Year Nine, and the pet of the family, Kaneezah, who just started her journey in studies in Year Two.
Sdr. Tuan Arfien Dane

Saudara Tuan Arfien Dane joined the MMA as a youth member in 1995 and continued to serve as a youth wing member holding several positions in the MMA YW. He organized various innovative youth projects such as Painting of the leprosy Hospital, MMA Annual Indoor Games tournament held at the Oils and Fats Corporation (Seeduwa), Annual Cricket tournaments, Sepak Takraw, Katchang Goreng, and many more during 1995- to 2002 as a youth member.

He joined the MMA Executive Committee in 2002 as Member –Youth Affairs and Sports and was subsequently elected to various positions such as VP Youth Affairs and Sports, VP Social and Cultural, VP Membership Administration, Hony. General Secretary and finally as the President during the MMA’s 25th Anniversary.  He served as President from 2009 to 2011.

The Malay Talent and Cultural Show “BINTHANG MELAYUA” was organized during his tenure in 2009, aiming to showcase the Culture and Dances of the Malay Community in Sri Lanka. The MMA also gave opportunities to other sister associations to perform at least one item during this show. This show was a great success and brought much needed income to fund future projects. Heartiest thanks to late Kalabushana Al Haj Ruffin Saldin and Sdr. Naushad Rassool for choreography, talent and contribution. 

 A new section - Membership administration was introduced to boost the membership of the association during Sdr. Arfien’s presidency.

A grass root level project in the form of a Heath Camp in Association with the Lions Club, was held at Al Ashraf Maha Vidyalaya, Mabole where more than 500 persons from all communities in and around Wattala - Mabole area were treated.

A career development project “Make it Happen” was also organized to develop the professional qualifications of the youth.

Sdr. Arfien Dane is a businessman attached to the medical trade and his wife Ayesha and daughters Mizra and Kathija are also life members of the association.

Sdr. Dirshan Jamal

Saudara Dirshan Jamal joined the MMA in 2002 and was subsequently elected as Director Youth Affairs and Sports.  During his tenure as Director/YA&S, the MMA saw a resurgence in the Youth and Sports field and a large numbers of youth joined the MMA during this period when many youth & sports activities were held.

Sdr. Dirshan was elected as the Vice President of the Youth Affairs and Sports Section in 2009. He was then appointed as Chairman of the “Binthang Melayu” Malay Cultural & Talent Show organizing committee and this stage show was held successfully at the Bishops College Auditorium on 21st Feb 2009.

In 2010 Sdr. Dirshan was elected as President of the MMA which post he held till 2012. During his tenure as President in 2012, the MMA organized a cultural show titled “Binthang Melayu and Caffres Sthrella with Butterflies” at the Sambuddha
Jayanthi Buddhist Centre Auditorium in Havelock Town, Colombo 5. This project was also a success as a fund raiser.

Sdr. Dirshan was employed at United Tractor and Equipment Ltd, for a long period, and he subsequently joined Trade Promoters Ltd, as Sales and Parts Manager. He now runs his own company DJ Enterprises, which specializes in printing.

His wife Fazeen and 2 daughters Zanira and Aneesa are also active members Of the MMA.
